WHAT’S OUR ¥?

Have you ever been conflicted, misusing your own influence? I know at times we’ve all done the same, even Kendrick Lamar can attest to that. However, one of the best things about this life is that we have a chance to make a change. That’s where TR$TFVND finds its origins. It brings awareness to some resources we all possess to create a better life filled with an abundance of health, wealth, and wisdom.

Back when I was conflicted, life seemed to be the opposite: death, poverty, and ignorance. I found out poverty has much more to do with mindset than money. Imagine waking up everyday in a black ‘hood’ in the middle of America, doubting that there would ever be change unless it had to do with a violent death accompanied by a numbing hopelessness or some other type of other bad news.

Nearly everyone who lived there was accustomed to the similar traumatic disorder of death. Now that I think of it, most of us have never heard of someone passing from natural causes. I can vividly remember being six years old, finding out the disheartening news of my older cousin getting killed. More than anything, I can recall the look of sorrow on not only my Mother’s face but also My Aunt’s. The cry for her son reminded me of the weeping and gnashing of teeth in hell, as only the Bible could describe. Except she didn’t have to wait until the afterlife to experience that pain.

My biggest issue is that hell didn’t end there. The problem quietly inseminated and grew from emotional chaos to economic disparity. The revolving door of destruction that leads to more unresolved trauma and latches on and spreads in many different facets, especially if affairs aren’t in order. TR$TFVND  emerged as a beacon of hope, a path toward healing from our deep-seated wounds, and an opportunity to set our affairs in order. Encompassing everything from the practicalities of insurance and power of attorney to the solemnity of last wills and testaments. It extends to the creation of trust funds, a legacy of values that will endure for generations to come.

A poignant chapter in my cousin’s story is that he couldn’t leave behind a trust fund for his children. Yet, despite this financial limitations, he managed to impart invaluable values to his offspring. Sadly, for many, the legacy they inherit isn’t one of wisdom and guidance; instead, it’s a burden of unanswered questions, financial obligations, and destructive habits. Far too often, the weight of these challenges becomes so overwhelming that we struggle to even begin the journey towards resolution in either domain.

 Rest In Paradise

Fast forward twenty-five years, and the staggering toll becomes all too clear — I’ve counted more than 42 young men, ranging from my dearest friends and family to those I only knew in passing. Many hailed from the neighborhood on 42nd and Post Rd in Indianapolis, IN, and tragically, a lot of their lives were cut short by accidents, homicide and avoidable premature deaths.

This troubling trend has regrettably become normalized and even glamorized. These are not just ordinary homicides; they have deep roots in the traumatic legacy of PTSD, exacerbated by the enduring scars of Post Traumatic Slave Disorder. Furthermore, these tragic events are perpetuated by the constant influence and covert maneuvers of individuals and corporations that do not have our best interests at heart. The pain from these unhealed wounds often manifests itself in the most unhealthy, impoverished, and unconscious ways.

Substituting escapism with fulfillment, our goal is to create a system where our loved ones, as well as anyone in need, could begin the change to lead lives full of health, wealth, and wisdom. In doing so, we knew we would have to take a page out of our gardening book and start at the root. Starting a mutual fund for values and making it available to all willing to invest, I thought it would be more important to understand ‘¥?’ Why invest? Why prioritize health? Why not do our best?

So we began incorporating things that not only help free the mind but also free the spirit. Meditation, journaling, reading, working out, and hiking in a communal way are greater for the soul than we can imagine. And making it bigger than just ourselves offers us the opportunity to cultivate the change we want to see in each other. They say when men change, the world changes. And since we want it to change for the better, we can do it the best if we do it together.

In honor of the children left without a parent, the parents enduring the unbearable loss of a child, and the gaping void within our community. Not to mention the countless others, myself included, burdened with wounds that may never fully heal. Or those who succumbed to mental and emotional strife that comes with these experiences, TR$TFVND is about paying a debt of gratitude that can only be balanced by living life to the fullest. It aims to ignite the fire of health, wealth, and wisdom and promote the initiative to live a fuller life by utilizing a 42-day challenge with your tribe. Let’s see if really takes 21 days to break a bad habit and another 21 days to form a good habit. We welcome you to build better habits with TR$TFVND.

Where we dedicate each day to something bigger than ourselves, and in the end, I’m sure we’ll be much closer to the change we want to see!

The TR$TFVND Travel Guide

Left the road, and blazed a trail.

Life in the valley of death

First off, if you’re reading this I want to sincerely thank you for taking time out of your day and lending your attention. These “Nurture Through Nature” hikes really mean a lot and this Death Valley excursion really hit home for us, literally.

The goal is to show people who have similar upbringings to our own that this world is ours to share as well.

Many don’t know but TR$TFVND hails its origins from a small hood in Indianapolis, IN. And one of the many low income housing projects there used to be called Sutton Place. But for reasons we all knew too well, everyone called it “Sudden Death” (seriously). The reason everybody referred to the four-square block area near 42nd Street and Post Road as sudden death is because murder happens there fast — and often. More than 80 people have been slain in since 2007 in this broken intersection of land on the Far Eastside, the deadliest in Indianapolis. By the grace of God we were able to find refuge on the West Coast and have discovered a need to share the possibilities of life outside the of the hood. Specifically through health, wealth, and wisdom. And one of the best ways to heal is exposure to nature.

On short notice, we decided that we wanted to visit the sand dunes in Death Valley since we had time away from work. Luckily, planning didn’t take much time or effort since its only a 4 hour drive from Los Angeles. We decided we were going to leave Friday afternoon so we could catch the sunset at the dunes, stay the night and camp, then check out the rest of the desert the following day. But even pictures and videos online didn’t prepare us for what we experienced that weekend.

We got to Mesquite Sand Dunes at what seemed like the perfect time. These great dunes resemble the Middle East or The Sahara Desert, only hotter. Luckily, this time of year is the best time to visit. Even the hottest place on Earth gets cold in the winter time (yup, Death Valley has the highest temperature ever recorded at 134 degrees) But today was a cool 60 degrees. As soon as I arrived I was struck by a sense of calm and tranquility like when Santiago from our favorite book, The Alchemist, arrived at the pyramids. The vast expanse of sand created an almost surreal landscape that made it me feel like I was in a different world. As the sun began to set and we climbed to the top of the tallest dune, the sky changed into a beautiful array of colors that reflected off the sand creating a truly mesmerizing view. It’s important to always take times like these to take a deep breath and let go of all the stresses and worries that we deal with on a daily basis. The journey was worth it.

We thought we had seen the best Death Valley had to offer til we went to Zabriskie Point. We read that the best time to experience it was during sunrise so we had an early morning wake up call at 6am. A higher power must’ve been on our side because arrived at our destination at nearly the perfect time again. The hill’s natural formations and the layered colors of the surrounding mountains created a stunning view. It truly felt like another planet. The soft light of the morning sun created a peaceful and calming atmosphere of awe and wonder. As the sun rose higher, the soft pinks and oranges of the landscape became more vibrant and vivid, and we couldn’t help but feel a sense of wonder and amazement at the all beauty that surrounded us. Hiking though Golden Canyon made this trip so much more incredible. It truly felt like a different planet. Later on we found out this is where a few scenes from Star Wars were filmed. It didn’t take long at all to come to the conclusion that his was our favorite location.

Experiencing these other worldly landscapes almost forces us to analyze our place and time on this planet. How we all came about to be and how short life is in comparison to how long the earth has been forming. It makes us question what is truly important. Forgetting the stresses and anxieties that keep us in fight or flight and being more present helps to increase feelings of well-being and has been proven to improve moods, especially in people with PTSD. We wish all our people from Sudden Death could see us now and hopefully one day see this place for themselves. Even though they call it Death Valley, it resembled like a place for hope.

After we enjoyed the nice hike the Zabriskie Point, it was time to head to Artist’s Palette. We couldn’t believe there was more to see. It was beginning to rival some of our m most amazing trips. Driving through Death Valley is an experience like no other, and the road to Artists Palette is no exception. As we cruised through the winding roads, the surrounding landscapes morphed into a natural canvas of colors, from deep reds and oranges to vibrant greens and blues. The drive was soothing and meditative, and we felt like we were leaving all our worries behind with each mile we covered. When we finally arrived at Artists Palette, the colors of the hills and rocks were even more vibrant than imagined and the pictures do it no justice. It was a dreamlike setting that made us feel like this where peace and serenity were born.

After being mesmerized by Artists Palette it was time to head towards our exit. But to the get there we had to cross the natural bridge. The hike to Natural Bridge was another one of the many highlights of our trip to Death Valley. The trail through the winding canyons and hills offered stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the unique natural formations of the park. Its enormity rivaled The Narrows of Zion, Utah. As we hiked, it felt as if we wer building our courage and strength with every step we took. When we finally arrived at Natural Bridge, I was amazed by the size and beauty of the arch. We though it was very interesting how we never knew a place like this existed so close to home. It was a natural structure that left me in awe of the power and beauty of nature. And if we thought this arch was impressive, we can’t wait to see what Moab, Utah has to offer in a couple months. It has a national park named “Arches”

The final stop on my Death Valley tour was the Badlands Basin. The rugged and almost eerie landscape of the basin was both beautiful and intimidating. It looked as white as snow but it was all salt. The stark contrast to the sand dunes and colorful hills made usfeel like I was in a completely different world. And this was all in a thirty mile radius. As we explored the basin, the lowest place in America, we embracing the healing power of nature. We understood why there were so many movies and music videos used this location to film. The sight of this white desert was a reminder of the beauty and resilience of the natural world.

In conclusion, the trip to Death Valley was a therapeutic and healing experience that left us feeling rejuvenated and refreshed. From the Mesquite Sand Dunes at sunset to the Badlands Basin, each stop on my journey offered a unique and powerful insight.

the plan

Our plan is to cultivate an outdoor mentorship club that takes advantage of the many beautiful hiking spots, trails, viewpoints, and waterfalls in California and surrounding states, and eventually the world. Spending more time outside can improve your memory, lower blood pressure, and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. But most importantly bring us closer to understanding who we are.

Articles of Insight Presents: Grant Simms

Meet Grant Simms, Co-Founder of 7House and Owner of Smerbo (Grant’s upcycled luxury garment brand). 7House is a live entertainment company that curates events for millennial art, fashion, and music enthusiasts, with ArtWay being their most notorized multi-state event.

Q: From our standpoint you are very successful, but what does success look like to you?

A: Success looks different for me every few years to be honest. As I gain more knowledge of self and the world, my ideas of success began to look different. Financial freedom, creative freedom, and HEALTH are where those ideas are right now at 26. A few years ago it looked like cars, jewelry, and more fancy shit. I think that right now I’m set on just simply finding the idea of freedom (whatever that is) and being healthy while doing it. A place where I can do what I want when I want, both financially and professionally in the most healthy mind-frame possible.

Q: What have been the most successful, glorious, and proud moments of your life? Who helped you to get there? Where were you? And how did it feel?

A: There have honestly been a few glorious and defining moments of my life that come to mind. I think my most special were Graduating college at ISU and having our first Artway in Atlanta. Both of those moments were so important to me because they took ALOT of work and sacrifice to complete. I would say everybody around me family, friends, peers in Indianapolis, etc. helped me in someway or another. Wether it was financial support, coming to an event, posting the flyer, a motivational text etc. Everything helped me complete those goals. Seeing your hard work pay off is a beautiful feeling and that’s what College WAS and 7House IS for me.

Q: Can you think of a time where you’ve had to persevere through an obstacle that might’ve discouraged other people?

A: Absolutely, I think my biggest obstacle thus far has been losing people very close to me at young ages. It discouraged me for years honestly and it still does sometimes, I just know how to cope better. It took a lot of self reflection and a great village around me to keep me going. I know first hand how losses that close and that young can discourage people in many ways. The perseverance of not only me but the people that went through it with me has been tremendous and I can only thank God and my angels for keeping us going.

Q: We loved the 7House Globe Trotters merchandise run, what do you think the world’s biggest issue is and what do you think the solution to the problem is?

A: I honestly believe the worlds biggest problem is a lack of love, and empathy. Being able to see things from multiple perspectives and show love regardless of those perspectives is key. I don’t really know what the solution is but I know showing that love and being empathetic is a way to start, leading by example. Finding ways to love yourself is also the beginning to the solution. That might be the most important.

Q: We all know the saying “birds of a feather flock together”, what are some positive attributes you’ve inherited from your parents, mentors, or friends?

A: I have inherited so much from my family and my peers. It’s unbelievable when you think about it, both good and bad. Through mentors, family, and friends I’ve inherited the ability to trust God, pay attention to the details around me, and to simply keep going. I grew up around a lot of people with different backgrounds so being able to inherit different attributes from school to street backgrounds has helped me tremendously.

Q: What are your most nourishing, healthy habits and how much have they made a difference in your growth?

A: I think that my most nourishing and healthy habits are honestly working out, prayer, and focusing on the LOVE around me. These are all things that I’ve just started being more consistent with in the past year and it has changed my life in major ways! A complete 180 almost. I want to get more consistent with meditation as well down the line.

Everything has an origin. This is a treatise, a systematic exposition in writing including a methodical discussion of the facts and principles involved and conclusions reached, on how TR$TFVND started.

In the beginning, when I decided to partner up to create TR$TFVND, it was to capture and embody the idea of wealth through fashion and garments. I was totally down to put out the new, flyest “clothing line”. Especially because it  aligned the two topics that I was already into: getting rich and getting fresh. Plus I knew I had some design ideas that would evoke thought that other people couldn’t help but love.

Unbeknownst to many, this catapulted me into a deeper soul search that I was already investing in on my own. Finding my purpose, a reason for being; TR$TFVND was enlightening me like nothing else ever had before. I was reading, writing, researching, and implementing what it truly meant to have a “trust fund”. Better known as a foundation for trust. For some a trust fund simply means money left after a wealthy grandparent or parent passes away, a luxury me nor anybody I know has inherited. Fortunately for me, I have a great Father who broke down that we’ve inherited much, much more than money.

Instead, me and many people like me have inherited a not so healthy nor optimum way of living. Smeared with addiction, poverty, obesity, illiteracy(financial), and many other traits I had to unlearn and reject. Most of all the lack of the knowledge of self, or our lineages. Little did I know I was beginning the process of cultivating a TR$TFVND for my family, friends, peers, and even my unborn children.

Cultivating TR$TFVND consisted of getting to know myself through and through, understanding my strengths and weaknesses, creating a noble aim, and being mindful of what I chose to consume, literally and figuratively. Comprhending why I do what I do and why I make the decisions I make, I began to spend my time more wisely.

As I made strides forward and stayed on course, I noticed the effects my new lifestyle was having on my personal life, work life, social life, and overall well-being. It turns out as I shed the cloak of greed masked as insecurity, I found out that sharing TR$TFVND is the entire reason and definition of its formation. To pass assets and virtues along so the next person in line can grow and build on it.

Our hope and goal is to reach the adults and adolescence alike who are coming up just as I did, feeling as if this world isn’t our own. Believing a lie that has been told for millennia. A lie that has led  to empty, chaotic relationships. A lie that has us on the verge of destruction through ignorance, unhealthiness, addiction, crime, misalignment, or bad decision making.

My goal is to bring truth and trust to as many souls as possible and get ahold this who yearn for a better life before the system or the grave does. The next goal is to honor our ancestors and the ones who blazed the trail before us. And to preferably remember the ones who are still in the midst of battling for the control of their lives right now.

In the beginning, I agreed to be apart of TR$TFVND for selfish reasons. Notoriety, greed, power, bragging rights. But because of the soul search TR$TFVND has led me on, I know that today, on January 3rd 2020, I am far from the beginning. I now plan to utilize TR$TFVND to promote intellectual property, assist and enlighten those who long for health, wealth, and wisdom. And to help them understand that The World is Yours.
